There is no doubt that forklifts are one of the basic and essential tools for a company’s logistics. That is why it is of vital importance to know everything about them. On this occasion, we will learn about the types of batteries for forklift trucks.
In this regard, we can talk about the three most important types, which are lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. We will discuss each of them in more detail below.
The 3 most commonly used types of batteries for forklift trucks
Contenido
Lead acid batteries,
The first of the 3 types of batteries for forklift trucks that we will talk about today are the lead acid batteries. Undoubtedly this battery model is the most used in forklift trucks and it is also the oldest. This type of batteries bases its operation on a chemical reaction between the lead plates and the sulfuric acid. The lead acid batteries can contain liquid or gel electrolyte, the latter do not require distilled water maintenance, although they are less used because the gel format raises the cost price.
Another of its most outstanding characteristics is that this type of lead acid batteries require less investment. However, they require maintenance during their useful life, checking water levels and cleaning connections. Its useful life can vary depending on the depth of the charge-discharge cycles and it is necessary to make full charges and to make these charges when the battery itself indicates it.
Lithium-ion batteries, one of the most popular types of batteries for forklift trucks.
The second type we will talk about today are lithium-ion batteries, also known as Li-on. This is one of the most advanced types of batteries for forklift trucks, but still with little market in large trucks, however it is being widely used in electric pallet trucks Its operation is based on the movement of ionized lithium between electrodes.
They have a number of advantages over other types, such as greater energy efficiency, longer life and less maintenance, among other advantages. Within the lithium batteries, we can find several types:
- LFP: an alloy of lithium, iron and phosphate.
- NMC: an alloy of lithium cobalt, nickel and manganese. This composition offers the highest energy density and high power, in addition to ensuring high performance over a longer service life.
- NCA: aluminum oxide alloy, lithium cobalt and high quality nickel. In this case, it gives the highest energy density and also power delivery. As in the previous one, the performance during its long service life is really high.
Hydrogen fuel cells
The last of the forklift truck battery types are hydrogen fuel batteries. This type of battery consists of a fuel cell stack, a 350 bar hydrogen tank, a small lithium battery and a fan.
Although the investment required is higher than in other types of batteries, hydrogen fuel batteries have the advantage of being able to store hydrogen in a gaseous state to be able to refuel more easily and it is very likely that this technology will grow in the market in the short term due to the many benefits it can give us.
