The connection of solar panels can be done in two ways in series or in parallel: This will depend on several things, including whether the solar installation of 12v, 24v 48v etc. … or the type of charge controller we have to install if it is a PWM solar controller or if it is a MPPT charge maximizer.
First we have to detect the polarity of the wires coming out of the
back of the solar panel. From these two wires we have a (+ Positive) and a (- Negative) as shown in the picture. Normally solar panels have two MC4 connectors at the end of the cable.
The PARALLEL CONNECTION OF SOLAR PANELS is done by connecting the positive wires all together and the negative wires all together. In this way the parallel connection of solar panels implies a sum of load intensity (Ah / Amperes) however we maintain the same working voltage (Volts or Voltage).
The image as an example shows a connection of 2 plates connected in parallel. If we have 2 solar panels of different sizes but the same operating voltage (Volts) we can connect them in parallel without any problem of operation, simply add the productions of the two solar panels keeping the same voltage.

The SERIAL CONNECTION OF SOLAR PANELS is achieved by connecting the solar panels to each other (positive + cable of one / negative – cable of the other).
By connecting solar panels in series, the working voltage (Volts) is multiplied while keeping the load capacity (Ah or Watts) intact, just the opposite of parallel connection.
For the series connection of several solar panels all the panels must be similar, both in load capacity (Watts) and voltage (Volts) – This type of connection is made when we provide the solar installation with Maximizers regulators (Mppt) because the working voltage of these equipments is from 100V to 150V. This type of connection is also made in solar installations of 24V or 48V, to reach the working voltage of the solar system. As an example in the image we can see a connection of solar panels in series,
- 4 plates of 34V in series = 136 working Volts
- 4 8 Amp Plates in series = 8 Amp work

There is a possibility that we may need an installation of SOLAR PANELS CONNECTED IN SERIES AND PARALLEL, and for this we must apply together the two previous options. In this image as an example we can see 4 plates connected in series, in the same way that we connect 3 strings of plates in parallel.
